Poem By Brad Curtis

LISTENING TO CHRIS

My dear ol dad called one day,
Asked me to come on by
Said he had bought a new one,
I needed to give her a try

This meant he bought one cheap,
A good one never has a low price
Grabbed my tapes of Chris,
Was sure I would need some advice

Before I hung up,
I ask dad about his new mare
He said, no need to worry son,
Y’all will make a good pair

Changed into my old jeans,
Put on a worn out shirt
No need to be dressed up nice,
When your goanna hit the dirt

Pulled on my hat then boots,
As my spurs did clink
Transformed into a bronc rider,
In just a wink

Fired up my ol truck,
Turned up Chris Ledoux
By the time I got there,
I’d know just what to do

Pulled up to his arena, there she was,
The new one he wanted me to ride
Dad came out of the barn,
His blue heeler at his side

Got out shaking my head,
Asked how much he gave for this ugly mare
He said, I got her cheap,
A price that was low and fair

Now this was not my first rodeo,
Cheap ones always ended up here
So I went out to my ol truck,
Listened to Chris, and grabbed my cowboy gear

Saddle, halter, reign, and chaps,
Nothing did I miss
Sure glad I was ready,
After all I’d been listening to Chris

Got my saddle on her,
Tightened up the cinch
So far she hadn’t moved,
She never did even flinch

Time to mount up,
On this cheap one dad had found
Like so many times before,
He had to ear her down

He then said, “Son be easy”
As for the reigns I did reach
Every time I got on one,
Dad would give his little speech

One foot in a stirrup,
About to climb into the saddle
That’s when I heard dad say,
“Wander how she’ll be, rounding up cattle”

Reigns in one hand,
I had a deep seat
Dad spit out her ear,
Then he un-hobbled, old ugly’s feet

Within a matter of seconds,
I wished I hadn’t answered the phone
Remembering Chris singing,
Something about a strawberry roan

Old ugly dropped her head,
And broke and bucked
I thought I heard Chris,
He was still blaring from my ol truck

First jump was bad,
Second was not any better
But I’d been listening to Chris,
I was sure I had what it took to sett’er

She had a duck, a dive,
As the dust filled the arena air
With every single move,
It was like Chris, was right there

After she had given it her all
She began to smooth-out
Heard dad say, “knew she’d be a good one,
I never had any doubt”

You see dad didn’t have any books
Or videos on how to break a horse
He came from the old school
And he had me listening to Chris of-course
